Generate solutions, not more problems
🎭 If you’re familiar with improvisational comedy, you’ve probably heard of the “yes, and…” principle.
If you haven’t, the rule is simple:
When you’re in a scene with another player, there are only two fundamental rules that should not be broken
👍🏼 Agree with the idea.
🤌🏼 And add something new.
🔁 This continuous cycle of agreement and addition is the force that moves the action forward. It’s how new characters are developed and original plot lines are imagined.
🛑 But when the opposite occurs, all motion stops.
🙅♂️ When you disagree with and diminish ideas, this prevents you and your team from moving forward towards truly innovative solutions.
You may inadvertently bring up even more issues and edge cases, taking your focus away from the primary problem area.
So when it’s time for new ideas, follow three simple principles:
1️⃣ Make it a goal to generate as many new ideas as possible.
2️⃣ Actively listen so you can build on the ideas of others.
3️⃣ Save evaluation for later.
When in doubt, choose YES.
