The “How Might We…” framework

The “How Might We” framework is a technique used in the design thinking method to present problems as opportunities.

It’s easy to do, but the nuances can take some practice.

All you have to do is frame your problem as a question, beginning with “how might we…”

The reason this particular arrangement of words is so powerful:

HOW - Implies we don’t currently have the answer and that there are actionable next steps towards a solution

MIGHT - Suggests multiple possibilities to explore

WE- Invites collaboration with everyone working on the same challenge

Common pitfalls include:

😴 TOO GENERIC - there’s a lack of focus on a specific problem area

Example: “How might we engage our students?”

😳 🚨 TOO FOCUSED - the prompt should avoid suggesting a particular solution

Example: “How might we create an educational streaming platform for high school seniors?”

🤔 JUST RIGHT: Focuses on the audience and invites action

Example: “How might we increase student engagement with our new curriculum?”

This is such a powerful tool for freelancers, business owners and teams to have up their sleeves when trying to solve the sticky problems we encounter everyday.

How might YOU use “how might we”?
